Jacquemus has become known for its spectacular presentations including a twisting pink runway amid the lavender fields in Provence and a socially-distant show throughout the wheat fields of Us, a commune in France’s Val-D’Oise area. But this season, the French fashion house travelled further than it had ever been before to a far flung coastline on the island of Hawaii.
The forthcoming collection is aptly titled “Le Splash” but according to designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, he wasn’t expecting to make such a large one. Unbeknown to viewers watching from home but the runway experienced a surprise torrential downfall during filming due to the current La Niña weather event that has saturated much of the Pacific.
“What a crazy day I will remember for the rest of my life,” the designer wrote via Instagram stories, alongside a video of a very wet runway. “This is the rain that start[ed] when all the models were ready to walk the show.”
According to Jacquemus, the final video featured mostly footage that was taken in the morning before the rain however. Some photographs and video have not been released due to the damage garments received from the weather.
“Most of this was shot on the morning before the rains…that’s why the picture are not out yet cause all the clothes were so damaged…and wet.. it hurts (sic),” he continued. “So sorry for this. We are finding solutions right now. Hope you will enjoy the video. Love you.”
Not even the rain could dampen the collection however, which was brimming with reimagined cult pieces and soon-to-be coveted silhouettes in a vibrant colour palette.
If anything, it’s giving “Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria Runway” which endured a freak hailstorm in Venice last year as models walked down the runway. In social media footage, guests could be seen frantically covering their heads and running for shelter.
Mother Nature said, “not today”.
