On Valentine’s Day, French fashion designer Simon Porte Jacquemus posted an Instagram photo of him and his husband, Marco Maestri, kissing in a pool. The picture quickly got over 400k likes with comments from celebrities such as Gigi Hadid and Caroline de Maigret. But not everyone double-tapped the public display of affection.

Following the post, Jacquemus shared a screenshot of a comment from a follower, who wrote they used to want one of his iconic bags, but “Now 🤮.” The vomit emoji referring to seeing the two men kiss. The 32-year-old designer behind the cult-favourite Le Chiquito bags responded to the comment directly, writing that homophobic customers aren’t wanted at Jacquemus and adding, “My bags don’t want you”.

“If you know how many gay [sic] are working at Jacquemus. We don’t want you as an [sic] homophobic potential clients. “You don’t deserve our products. Period,” he later shared on Instagram, adding, “I don’t need your homophobic point of view. And my bags don’t need you. Dégagé.”

Following the post, Jacquemus took to Instagram stories to share further homophobic comments he’d received on his Instagram, writing, “2022?”. In another slide, he added, “I’m happy we having somehow this painful conversation. I grew up [without] gay couple figure [sic] and I know how is important to be one of the [example] for the young kids out there. We will fight for them, to show that love always wins. I will keep posting pictures of love. Always. You are beautiful never forget that.”

Jacquemus, whose 2021 spring-summer campaign celebrated LGBT+ couples and was launched during Pride Month in June, received support from fans, celebrities and customers with Bella Hadid commenting love hearts and many writing they “want ur bags even more now🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈.”

You heard Jacquemus: Homophobic? You’re not wanted here. One more time for the people in the back.
