With Spain in a nationwide lockdown to combat the spread of Coronavirus, Zara stores across the country have been forced to close under an order by the Catalan Government. So instead of making clothes, Zara’s parent company, the Inditex fashion group, is making masks for those affected by Covid-19.

The Spanish-based company announced it will be making its factories and logistics teams available to the Spanish Government to donate masks for patients and medical workers in the wake of the Coronavirus crisis. In a statement, Inditex declared it “will make a delivery at least once a week of materials we purchase directly,” and that it has  “already donated 10,000 protective face masks and by the end of this week expects to be in a position to ship another 300,000 surgical masks,”  which according to the Spanish health authorities is the most needed medical equipment right now, along with gloves, protective glasses, caps, shoe covers, and face shields.

The statement also notes that it is currently sourcing medical grade fabric for hospital gowns, and “investigating the possibility of switching some of our textile-manufacturing capacity over to the production of health materials, involving Inditex’s manufacturing experts to that end.”

The news comes off the back of other fashion benevolence from Prada, Moncler and Giorgio Armani who have all pledged money and medical facilities to aid the devastating impact of Covid-19 on the world.
