It’s a red-hot fallacy that stylish women travel with trolley-loads of chic designer luggage. Rather, the savviest amongst them are so clever at streamlined packing, they stroll off a flight with a chic designer carry-on bag instead. (Because waiting at carousels is such a dull way to start a beach holiday.)
Beach resort holidays to paradise hotspots like Bali, Bora Bora, Fiji, Koh Samui, Hawaii and even the Maldives have the obvious added advantage of warm weather, meaning heavy coats and multilayers don’t exist as packing woes. Mix and match the right way and you can breeze out of the airport like an A-lister (ie. sans heavy bag trolley).

Step one: stick mostly to a neutral or uniform colour palette. Whites, nudes, black and denim are all obvious winners, with a few coloured aaccessoriesand metallic details to add some spice. Denim can be worn for both casual day and formal night right now, thanks to the surge of designer denim pieces we’ve seen on the runways of past two seasons. (Tailored denim is the new athleisure.)
1. FOR THE BEACH
It all starts with the perfect swimsuit, in this case a lace-panelled black one-piece by Australian favourite Zimmermann that’s exclusive to Netaporter. Add all-purpose shorts, a giant tote like this raffia-effect one from Truss (which could double as carry-on handbag on the plane), a large printed scarf either as a bandana or sarong-style wrap, and of course a wide-brimmed sunhat like this beauty by Eugenia Kim that’s as practical as it is pretty. Coloured-lens aviators add a pop of up-beat colour.
2. FOR CASUAL LUNCHES
While this dress by CDFA winner Jonathon Simakai would look stunning worn with just slides, fun accessories help keep the look casual. Tie the scarf around your pony tail or wrist (a la the big street style trend outside the Spring/Summer 2017 runway shows), hook sunglasses over the top of your dress’s decolatage area and slip on an all-purpose black leather slide, like these by Chloe with a distinctive toe-loop. If cool enough, add a denim jacket. We especially love this one by Madewell for its worn pale hue and cropped arm length. Just add water.
3. OUT AND ABOUT
Whether you’re strolling the markets, taking in tourist views or window shopping local wares, the key is to keeping things simple and comfortable is great shoes and a big bag. Wear your swimsuit as a bodysuit under the half buttoned-up denim jacket. Sunglasses and flat shoes add to the laid-back chic. Again, this works thanks to the black, white and denim palette: tied 4. together with the blue hue in the shades.
4. FOR THE POOL BAR
Swim up resort bars are what indulgent holidays are made of, so it’s only right you step it up a notch in the accessory department. Using that chameleon-like black swimsuit, go heavy with the layered bling. In this case, team the Cutler and Gross shades with the hat after tying the scarf as a strip around its brim, any excess fabric trailing loose down back (but not low enough to fall into the water). Or you could whip it off to use as a sarong skirt as the sun goes down. Here’s the crunch: it’s entirely appropriate to wear huge earrings by the pool. These modern-look chandeliers by Eddie Borgo are perfectly multi-purpose (the dual metals mean they’ll match with everything) and would look stunning with just the swimsuit along, half-hidden by messy, loose hair if you dare.
5. FOR FINE DINING
What’s luxury living without a refined evening out? Or perhaps you’re on holiday to celebrate a special occasion. Either way, a great fitted-waist dress will double as a maxi skirt when worn under a cropped tie-front top, like this linen one from swimsuit queen Lisa Marie Fernandez. (Team it with the blue shorts for another chic daytime look.) Statement earrings and designer flats lift the look, which is finished perfectly with a small clutch (we love this white one featuring a blue hydrangea print by Dolce & Gabbana) that could double as a jewellery case in your tote as carry-on luggage.
