Welcome to another instalment of A Stylist’s Take where this week my sartorial rule is “more is more is more”! Yes, waist-up Zoom dressing is behind us (thank gosh!), and a new era of putting on all of the intricate pieces we own is here; family heirlooms, meaningful trinkets, the list goes on. Ahead, a little tutorial on how to layer your jewellery. Wallflowers need not apply.

Consider “de-mystifying” your treasured jewellery. That is, don’t always tuck it way for “special occasions” but maximise its impact by wearing those precious stones or pearls with your leather jacket and cashmere sweatpants. Or, in this case, we’ve taken full creative license and layered model Annabel’s braids with a multitude of earrings. If you’re fortunate to have multiple ear piercings the combinations for a unique ear stack is endless: a mix of hoops, studs, pearls or a mini opals set in gold, platinum or silver.
I love to elevate a plain white t-shirt and vest with an oversized chain. Sometimes you only need the one chunky chain, whether that chain be an industrial square-like link, sculptural, or embellished with studs and diamonds for an artful twist.

Stacking your jewellery is personal and an art form. The pieces you collect tell a story. Perhaps the ring was a gift or the bracelet was something you picked up while on holidays and reminds you of the good times. I love mixing family heirlooms, like my mother’s hand-me-down locket with contemporary style necklaces and jewelled pendants. Throw in a semi-precious beaded trinket to show you’re not too precious!

While there’s no set rules for how you mix and stack your necklaces, bracelets or rings, there are a few things to look out for. For necklaces, opt for different lengths and sizing. I like to start with a choker or fine link to sit close to my neck, and work down with longer chains and statement pendants in an array of sizing to balance out the proportions.
If rings are your thing, experiment with all shapes and styles, whether stacked or spaced out amongst the fingers. Take an eye catching cocktail, signet, diamond band or solitaire semi-precious stone and combine together for a grand gesture. You’ll instantly transform from day to night. Mix your metals to curate your own unique look. And remember, each piece you add tells a little more about the individual you are.

Fine jewellery can be quite the investment and sometimes hard to justify. But be assured that finding that signature piece will stand the test of time. Opt for timeless yet avant-garde styles that you’ll want to wear every day, and maybe forever?
