New Zealand-born makeup artist Michael Ashton has admitted in a new interview with Page Six Style, that he never thought Adele‘s signature winged eyeliner would become so iconic. Nevertheless, it made a triumphant return on Friday when the singer debuted her new single and music video, “Easy On Me”.
Ashton who began his career as a hairstylist first met Adele ahead of her debut album, 19, in 2007. He is best known for painting famous faces like Hilary Swank, Keira Knightley and Penélope Cruz, and recalls trimming Adele’s fringe before being asked to do a quick eyeliner for the artist.
“I popped over to her house to trim her fringe and she asked if I could do a quick bit of eyeliner for her before she went to meet friends,” Ashton told the publication. “The eyeliner obviously got the seal of approval and the rest, as they say, is history.”
It’s common knowledge that a perfect winged-liner is not easy to do. So naturally, Marc Jacobs Beauty’s global artistry ambassador was asked to spill some of his tips and tricks on 
nailing the look. He first suggests working your way inwards from outer corner of your eye.
“When doing eyeliner on yourself, I always recommend starting from the outer corner and working inwards. It makes the hand create a straighter line towards the inner corner of the eye,” he advised.
“So, you start at the outer end of your lash line working in towards the middle, then do a fine line from the inner corner of the eye to join the two lines together. Finish by doing the flick last at an upward angle towards the temple.”
And if you mess up?
“If you find the flick is coming a bit too far down, drag it up at a 45-degree angle,” Ashton said. “As you drag it upwards, it will sharpen the line and give you a more elongated, lifted look to the eye.”
