It’s well known that wearing formal clothes while working from home can increase productivity. During the peak of the 2020 lockdown, Helen Mirren felt that wearing makeup everyday elevated her mood.

Speaking on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, Mirren discussed being in lockdown with her husband Taylor Hackford.

“Every day I put on makeup,” Mirren told People, adding it had nothing to do with what her partner thought. “I didn’t do it for Taylor because Taylor never notices. He asks if I’ve got makeup on or not and doesn’t really care, but he certainly doesn’t notice.”

“He’ll sometimes say in a rather puzzled way, ‘Oh, you look really nice,'” The Queen star continued. “You just associate the fact that I look nice with the fact I’ve just spent an hour doing my makeup!”

Why? “Because I enjoy it”, she noted. “I felt like I was living my life properly. So, it was actually a good experience for me.”

Keira Knightley has the same idea. The actress told Harper’s Bazaar in June that she wore Chanel and a red lip during lockdown to boost her own mood.

Mirren appeared on the red carpet last week for the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival and the screening of Annette. She wore a marigold yellow Dolce & Gabbana gown, yellow pumps and emerald jewels.

“I love the opportunity to wear incredibly beautiful clothes,” she told the aforementioned publication. “I appreciate the craft of couture. I’m a girl, I love, love dressing up.”

The actress did note however that she’s “perfectly happy to give it all away at the end of the night and go back to my scruff.” After the yellow D&G, Mirren stuck to a monochrome palette for the rest of her time in Cannes, and was the definition of enduring elegance.
