Watching the images come in from the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, I was struck by a common thread. The women who looked the most relaxed, the most stylish and luminous, the ones who appeared to be having the most fun – were all over 40. It began with the inimitable Helen Mirren, who fronted up to the iconic event in a marigold Dolce & Gabbana frock.

With a matching bag, satin pumps and emerald jewels Mirren’s hair was raked back into a bun, allowing all the focus to fall on her radiant complexion. She emitted ease, elegance and confidence, laughing, smiling and offering the throng of photographers the thumbs up as they captured her image.

Andie MacDowell‘s poise was similarly evident. The actor look equal parts sexy and comfortable in her shimmering silver gown, pulling her trademark curls back for the occasion. There was no desire to hide the greying hue of her hair, as MacDowell instead contrasted the tone against her bright crimson lipstick.

Jodie Foster similarly let her silver hues flow through her soft colour without a single trace of self-consciousness, as she posed in her column Givenchy gown.

And honestly, is there anybody on the red carpet I would rather look like than Charlotte Gainsbourg or Jane Birkin? Standing arm-in-arm in black tailored suiting, a refreshing double act both secure in their style, it feels as if the new era of red carpet elegance has (finally) arrived.

We truly love to see it.
