No one does horror quite as well as Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro in our book, so when we heard he was behind a new Netflix anthology series, we expected brilliant. The first look at Cabinet of Curiosities has landed, and so far we aren’t disappointed.

While del Toro created the Netflix concept, he’s actually recruited several of the best horror/fantasy directors to step behind the lens of each episode. Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Red Riding Hood) helms ‘Dreams In The Witch House’, which is based on a short story by renowned horror writer H.P Lovecraft and stars Rupert Grint of Harry Potter fame, while Australian director Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) leads the first episode, ‘The Murmuring’, starring Essie Davis (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) who also starred in The Babadook, and Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead).

Those are just two examples of the star-studded cast and crew involved in Cabinet of Curiosities, with other notable appearances by Crispin Glover, Eric Andre and Ben Barnes dotted across the eight episodes.

The first look is fronted by Guillermo del Toro himself, as he explains the origin of the Netflix series. A collection of stories curated by the filmmaker himself, del Toro also hand-picked the directors and writers of each episode. This really is a project of love for the Shape Of Water director. “Each of the episodes has a whole world,” he explains of the separate episodes. “They present you with different delights.”

2022 will be a big year for the filmmaker, as his stop-motion animated film Pinnochio is also set for release, toward the end of the year. Starring Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton and Stranger Things breakout Finn Wolfhard, this version of the well-loved fairytale will, of course, be very dark – as is the del Toro way.

The eight episodes of Cabinet of Curiosities are being released from October 25 (just in time for Halloween, of course) and will drop as double-features each week.
