Change is as good as a holiday, and a fresh hair colour is about as good a change as you can get. Winter, as clichéd as it may be, is without a doubt the perfect time to visit your colourist. Grey skies and a lack of natural light can leave us feeling flat and lacklustre, but a few aptly placed highlights or lowlights may very well be the perfect antidote. To help you on your way to shiny, glossy hair colour heaven, Vincent Nobile of Headcase Hair has offered his expert advice, from colour care to trending shades. If you’re a blonde, icy, Scandinavian hues are big news, or consider breaking up your brunette with shades of copper or caramel. Either way, a freshen-up now will see you through to warmer days. Also, much cheaper than a plane ticket to somewhere balmy.

What are the top hair colour trends this season?

“This winter I’m working with various shades of café latte, honey rose, auburn copper, honey blonde and Scandi blonde. I like adding some contrast in my colour work for winter – it allows me to blend in some depth, giving dimension and creating focus around the face and ends.”

Is going darker for winter something you’re a fan of?

“This isn’t always the case – it depends on the colour. Sometimes I add depth into brunette to give it some strength. I’ll also often add brightness to blonde so it’s not too dull. A little lightness makes the face pop.”

What are you tips for colour care during the colder months?

“Colour usually fades less in winter as it’s not affected by sun and swimming. However, hair gets dehydrated in winter from wind and heating, so I recommend using a hydrating mask. The Oribe Masque for Beautiful Color is amazing.”

What are your favourite products for at-home colour care and maintenance?

“I am always recommending products to preserve colour and to maintain the condition of the hair. My favourites include Oribe Power Drops Color Preservation Booster to shield hair from UV rays and enhance colour retention, and Virtue Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner to nourish and rebuild the hair.”

What’s the biggest myth you hear about hair colour?

“The biggest myth I hear about hair colour is that it’s really damaging and drying to your hair. If it’s done properly, it shouldn’t be.”
