Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik may no longer be together, but they are determined to keep things as smooth as possible for their daughter, Khai. Despite keeping tight-lipped about the circumstances around their split in 2021 after six years of on-off dating, the model has now opened up for the first time about what it’s like co-parenting her two-year-old daughter with her ex.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Hadid said the two keep “the importance of the child’s happiness at the forefront.”

“You have a long life alongside this person,” she explained, adding that she organises her hectic work schedule around when Khai is with her dad to get the most out of their time together.

For Hadid, whose parents split when she was five years old but remained close, it was always important that her daughter grow up with the same kind of relationships. “That she can be with both parents makes me very happy,” she said.

Just like herself, daughter Khai’s parents are from opposite sides of the world: Beverly Hills and West Yorkshire. But while she’s growing up in New York City, Hadid revealed that Khai has picked up “little bits” of British traits from her dad.

“She’s clearly a child who was grown in my stomach eating a lot of British food—breakfast, beans, curries. And she still eats like that,” Hadid revealed. “She even says some words with a little [British] accent, which I love.”
She also spoke lovingly of the joy that Khai has brought to her life.

The 27-year-old, who recently launched the knitwear label Guest In Residence, and has taken on the role of co-host for season two of Netflix’s Next In Fashion series, also gushed about what motherhood has been like.

“She has already given me so much,” she said of her first child. “I always wanted to be a mum, but I was never obsessive about it or [thought that] I was put on this Earth to be a mum. I’ve always been quite organised, so having Khai at the time that I did was a blessing.”

Though it’s been two years since she welcomed Khai, Hadid has only shared a few glimpses of her on social media. In May of 2021, she posted a carousel of sweet photos with the caption:

“The rumors are true: my best friend, purpose, muse, greatest pride & joy! I feel so lucky and inspired bein your mama, my Khai !! An old soul full of sunshine, you light up everyone’s days! Thank you 🧡 thank you 💛 thank you 💕”
