Since the birth of her first child, a baby girl named Khai with boyfriend Zayn Malik, Gigi Hadid has swapped her fast-paced lifestyle for low-key living on her farm. Popping up every now on Instagram, the 26-year-old will share Pinterest-worthy images of rolling green hills, horses, and veges grown straight from her garden. Refreshingly, Hadid has been in no rush to get back to the office—or, in her case, runway—since becoming a mother, opting instead to dip out of the fashion world almost entirely for the past year to focus on her family life. But after a pandemic-prompted hiatus for the past few seasons, fashion month has finally returned, and with it so has Hadid.
Marking her first runway appearance since the birth of her daughter 11 months ago, Hadid walked Proenza Schouler’s New York Fashion Week show on Wednesday night. The show, which took place at sunset on Little Island—an artificial island park that looks out onto the Hudson River—was one of the season’s first star-studded events, with the likes of Emily Ratajkowski, Tommy Dorfman and Diplo sitting pretty in the front row. Hadid modelled one of the loudest looks of the collection, wearing a yellow and blue maxi dress with a black velvet vest over top, white mules and leggings. Her friends, the brand’s creative directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, clearly choose carefully who would don one of their key prints for the upcoming season, knowing full well a Hadid re-entry into the fashion world is sure to be a runway moment.
The collection otherwise was made up of a lot of colour blocking bold hues—fuchsia pink, yellow and tangerine—clearly capturing the optimism people are feeling with the idea that we may finally be heading into a brighter, pandemic-free, future.
A combination of clean lines and sculpted silhouettes were present throughout with many tailored pants paired with long, loose tops. Otherwise simple dresses were embellished with cut-outs and arm tassels and models donned a selection of chunky sandals, loafers and mules sure to sell out.
Embracing Tik Tok—and making the most of having a slew of models dressed in their designs—the brand enlisted those backstage to create a cute tongue in cheek video about how to pronounce its name. There were quite a few attempts, but we’d say given Hadid chose Proenza Schouler for her first show back, she likely knows what she’s talking about. We’re going with Gigi on this one…
