Accidents on movie sets happen all the time—just this month, Alec Baldwin tragically accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while filming in New Mexico. In 2018, George Clooney’s terrifying incident happened when he was on the way to set, with the actor crashing his motorbike into a car while driving to film the Hulu series Catch-22 in Sardinia, Italy, in 2018.
Though the actor is thankfully fine and fully recovered now, in a newly released interview, Clooney opens up about how terrifying the crash was in the moment, revealing the thoughts going through his head as the accident took place.
Speaking with The Sunday Times, Clooney says that when his bike went airborne he thought he was going to die. “I was waiting for my switch to turn off,” he said. When he hit the ground, Clooney says a crowd of people gathered around him and that some, realising who he was, began recording him. “If you’re in the public eye, what you realise when you’re on the ground thinking it’s the last minute of your life is that, for some people, it’s just going to be entertainment for their Facebook page,” he said.
“I’m a pretty positive guy, but that told me—clearly—that you really are here just for their entertainment.”
The now 60-year-old was taken to the hospital and discharged later that same day. His wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, and their twins, Ella and Alexander Clooney, were with the actor in the city as he wrapped up filming. A
ddressing his family to The Times, Clooney said they were front of mind during the incident. “We have young kids,” he said. “I want to be able to live all of this.”
Clooney also spoke about the experience in an interview with GQ last year, saying, “My kids were like a year old and mostly it was just the thought that this was it and that I wasn’t gonna see them again.”
