All of the flair and frivolity of Haute Couture Week continued at the weekend as Pierpaolo Piccoli presented Valentino couture Fall/Winter 2022 from the Spanish Steps in Rome. The fashionable affair welcomed the likes of Naomi Campbell, Anne Hathaway and Florence Pugh to the front row in the designer’s current collection.
Pugh admitted on Instagram overnight that she didn’t expect to receive much, if any, commentary on her gorgeous ensemble which featured a sheer high-neck tulle gown from the House’s Pink collection. Instead, the actress says she was bombarded with criticism by body shammers. “I was excited to wear it, not a wink of me was nervous,” Pugh wrote in a caption referring to the gown. “I wasn’t before, during or even now after.”
The Black Widow star continued, describing a group of men who “proudly” and “publicly” destroy women’s bodies online, even with their job titles and work emails visible in their personal bios. “It isn’t the first time and certainly won’t be the last time a woman will hear what’s wrong with her body by a crowd of strangers, what’s worrying is just how vulgar some of you men can be,” she added.
“Thankfully, I’ve come to terms with the intricacies of my body that make me, me. I’m happy with all of the ‘flaws’ that I couldn’t bear to look at when I was 14,” Pugh wrote. “So many of you wanted to aggressively let me know how disappointed you were by my ‘tiny tits’, or how I should be embarrassed by being so ‘flat chested’. I’ve lived in my body for a long time. I’m fully aware of my breast size and am not scared of it.”
Pugh recalled how grateful she was to have grown up in a household “with very strong, powerful, curvy women.” “We were raised to find power in the creases of our body… It has always been my mission in this industry to say ‘fuck it and fuck that’ whenever anyone expects my body to morph into an opinion of what’s hot or sexually attractive,” the actress argued.
Her caption was met with a wave of support and in particular from proud feminist Jameela Jamil, who commented, “You’re a magical fucking queen and we do not deserve you.” Fellow actress Joey King also commented, “You are truly so amazing. You put into words what so many feel but can’t articulate.”
