Over the past few days, the internet – or, more accurately, one very specific segment of it – has been going crazy after photos of actress Florence Pugh and her Midsommar co-star Will Poulter were shared online, showing the pair on what looked like a romantic European getaway in Ibiza. There were cute bikini photos, photos of the former co-stars frolicking in the ocean together, and one which looked very much like Poulter was motorboating – yes, remember that phrase? – Pugh.

Now, if you’re wondering what all the fuss is about – young love! Let them live! – it’s mostly concerning the fact that until these images were shared, Pugh was thought to be in a long-term relationship with Scrubs actor Zac Braff since 2018. A relationship which she’s publicly defended multiple times (usually when concerning the pair’s 21-year age gap).

After a few days of Midsommar fans getting used to the idea of this new relationship, Pugh has spoken out to shut the reports down, saying she was not on a romantic vacay, as The Daily Mail would have you think, but rather on a big group trip with friends, who were carefully cropped out of the photos. Goold old tabloid media.

“Ooookay. Man. This is getting a little silly now. No, Will Poulter and I are not dating,” the actress, 26, wrote via her Instagram Stories on Tuesday.

“We went to the beach with our friends, who are always about a half a metre away from us in every picture, but have been cleverly cut out/ framed out so that it looks otherwise. You can LITERALLY see my best friend in the corner of so many shots and Archie’s arms at the sides.”

She continued, “I understand that the nature of this job is that you sometimes get your privacy completely bulldozed by paparazzi, but to fabricate this stuff actually does more damage than good. Thanks for saying we look sexy..doesn’t mean we’re doing the sexy.”

In another image of her best friend on the beach Pugh wrote, “This is my best mate Olive who I actually DID snuggle with for hours on this bed. What’s hilarious is that my nipple kept popping out and I am actually GOBSMACKED they didn’t catch it.” She continued, “probably can see the pap in the distance… hiding behind some poor family, waiting for the optimum time of ‘let’s make a fake relationship happen.’ Grosssss.”

“Another note, a very important note. There’s no need to drag people through this,” Pugh continued in another post. “Regardless of your opinion on who I should or shouldn’t be with, at the end of the day, if you’re complimenting someone by trolling another person…you’re just bullying. There’s literally no need to be horrible online- no need.”

There you have it: no making up fake relationships when Florence Pugh is involved.
