These days celebrity feuds are almost a weekly occurrence and even fashion designers are accustomed to the odd ego-off, but the backstage world of beauty is generally a love fest and one where credit is always paid if due. So when followers started throwing shade at make-up artist Peter Philips over the dazzling salmon-pink pouts he created for the Fendi Spring/Summer 2017 show in Milan, it was unfamiliar territory to say the least.

So why was this make-up visionary’s Instagram feed suddenly copping negative comments? Fans were claiming a case of déjà-pout, saying Philips’ peach lips were a bit too similar to fellow make-up master, Pat McGrath’s frenzy-inducing glitter creation at Versace AW16 Couture in July. Since then McGrath has become the unofficial high priestess of the glitter movement, releasing DIY lip kits at Sephora in the US and emulating the look at DKNY SS17 in New York last week.

In what could be perceived as a subtle side-eye moment, McGrath posted an old video of Ashley Marie Jones wearing her own lip glitter in Flesh (the shade most similar to that at Fendi) just an hour after Philips’ sent supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid, Taylor Hill and Stella Maxwell down the catwalk. Might we sense a bit of backstage beef, or just a shimmery coincidence?

After all this is hardly Philips’ first foray into using glitter at fashion week. In his former post as Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, Philips’ created countess iconic beauty looks using the dazzling material from the sequinned eyebrows at AW12 to the chunky silver eyeliner at Couture SS14. With the glitter trend gathering pace it won’t be long before another artists uses it backstage, particularly with the most theatrical Paris shows still to come. Perhaps then angry fans will have settled down enough to appreciate the efforts of both artists, and if not, then at least the glue under their glitter will keep their mouths closed to further criticism. Play nice people.
