Emma Stone is no stranger to a cinematic fashion moment. While promoting her latest Yorgos Lanthimos film, Bugonia, in New York this week, the actress delivered one of her most memorable IYKYK fits yet—a deft homage to Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic Great Expectations look from 1998.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Stone channelled Paltrow’s Estella in an open Kelly-green shirt, ever-so-slightly pinned together, and a matching bias-cut skirt flecked with a subtle metallic. True to Paltrow’s take, she kept accessories and glam to a minimum, adding only Manolo Blahnik Susa mules in black and some diamond stud earrings.

The original ensemble—designed by Donna Karan for her Spring/Summer 1996 collection—is long revered in fashion history for defining a particular kind of ’90s sensual minimalism that has dominated moodboards in recent years. Distilling power dressing down to its essentials, favouring clean silhouettes over embellishment, and masterfully balancing a tasteful flash of skin, it’s clear why Karan’s work was a staple of the time.

In Great Expectations, Estella is a vision of effortless Manhattan elegance. Nearly three decades later, the aesthetic still undoubtedly resonates thanks to brands reviving it through a contemporary lens—like The Row and St. Agni, to name some.

Whether Stone’s stylist Petra Flannery sourced the look from the archives or from a contemporary revival, it’s a pitch-perfect departure for the Kinds of Kindness star, who has long been a loyal ambassador for Louis Vuitton.

While it’s a look commonly referenced in fashion circles as an instantly recognisable costume, on Stone, the look feels familiar yet entirely new—her red bob perfectly complementing the vibrant green hue.
