Emma Stone has undergone quite the transformation for her role in Disney‘s upcoming prequel to 101 Dalmations. The studio has just released the new trailer and first poster for the film, titled Cruella, that will see audiences discover the backstory behind the infamous villain, played by Stone.
The poster reveals Stone in Cruella De Vil’s trademark black-and-white curls, vampy eye makeup and bold lipstick. It’s a definite departure from how we’re used to seeing Stone, but we’re absolutely here for this edgy depiction of De Vil.

Cruella, which is slated for released in May 2021, will be a live-action film and set in the 1970s punk scene. The 32-year-old will play a young De Vil, who works as a designer before becoming completely enamoured by dogs’ coats. Emma Thompson is also set to star.
Stone previously revealed in a teaser clip for Cruella that the she is excited for the film’s edgy setting. “It’s 1970s, set in London – it’s punk rock. A great cast,” she said, citing the original 1961 cartoon and Glenn Close as her inspirations behind the performance. Close brilliantly portrayed De Vil in the 1996 adaptation of the story and also serves as Cruella‘s executive producer.

“I think she’s [Close] obviously the GOAT,” Stone explained. “But I also have just loved the cartoon for a really long time.”
“This comes before [Close’s] story,” she told ET of her take on De Vil’s younger years. “This leads to her to where she becomes true greatness.” The star also added that being on set for such an iconic project is “pretty trippy. It’s wild.”

Stone is also currently pregnant with her first child. She confirmed the happy news with her husband Dave McCary earlier this year.
