When you think of Emma Stone, you likely picture her with red hair. When you think of Hollywood redheads in general, no doubt she springs to mind. The actress has become so synonymous with her adopted hair colour that it’s easy to forget she’s a natural blonde.

Having dabbled in brunette and all shades of the red hair spectrum over the years, from pale ginger to deep auburn, the 34-year-old is no stranger to some seasonal beauty experimentation. And now it seems the new mother has decided to go back to her roots (excuse the pun) as a blonde for the summer.

As shared by her hairstyled Mara Roszak, Stone has undergone a major change with a fresh platinum blonde bob.

Telling Vogue about the process, Roszak explained that Stone’s new structural bob is thanks to clever cutting—a point-cut technique along with razored sections, to be specific—and individual extensions to add volume.

The hairstylist also gave tips for those looking to replicate the look—a godsend for those of us who freeze up in the salon seat. “When asking for a chin-length bob, know that the cut should be a tiny touch longer in the front for subtle dimension,” she advised. “Emma just went bleach blonde, so this was the perfect time for a cut to give her a healthy refresh. She’s always open to seeing herself in different ways and truly trusts the process.”

Celebrity extensions expert Priscilla Valles then worked her magic, adding 15 individual extensions to the actress’ cut to bring some dimension. “Individuals are the most luxurious extension because they move and flow like natural hair,” Valles said, noting that the option is the least damaging to the scalp. “It’s like building a wig on the head as opposed to a heavy weft or clip-in. They’re extremely lightweight.”

Stone once discussed her red hair origin story during a 2010 interview with The Independent, revealing director Judd Apatow’s hand in her iconic look.

“When I first moved to LA, I had this agent who thought, because I was blonde, that I only wanted to play cheerleaders,” she shared. “So she’d send me out for all these parts where they thought: ‘What a weird 15-year-old. It’s not going to work out!’ I don’t know if anyone necessarily underestimated me as a blonde—I think I just had a crappy agent. So one day, in a fit of trying to do something different, I just dyed my hair dark brown and got my first role a week later, after which I thought: ‘People are closed-minded, man! Like a different hair colour changes everything!’ Then, for Superbad, my hair was brown at the test, but Judd [Apatow] said to dye it red, and I’ve mostly had red hair ever since.”

While this isn’t the first time she’s gone blonde, having previously reverted back to the shade to portray Gwen in The Amazing Spiderman moviesthe Scandi-hue combined with the short crop is a big mood for summer.
