As I’m sure we’ve all come to re-learn, the sartorial Y2K trend is far expanding and now we’ve had a moment to dabble in butterfly motifs, Juicy Couture tracksuits and low-slung jeans, our favourite celebrity style icons have turned their attention to the next micro-trend. Behold, the pleated check mini skirt.

Of course we should have seen it coming, after all, Olivia Rodrigo who has just barely graduated from high school herself has fully embraced the teen aesthetic since her meteoritic rise to fame. The pop star has been photographed on her 2022 SOUR tour wearing a punk-inspired iteration of a school uniform but it wasn’t until she was spotted in New York City this week wearing another check mini skirt, that the trend reached full street style potential.

Overnight, Rodrigo was papped leaving Madison Square Park in a white t-shirt, knitted vest and teeny checked mini skirt. It was paired with black crew socks, platform loafers (colloquially known as “creepers” for nineties babies) and green-tinted sunglasses.

She also later appeared in a separate checked-look alongside 25-year-old Zack Bia, which has since sparked a myriad of romance rumours. See the images, here.

The school-esque aesthetic was further enforced overnight thanks to Dua Lipa. The singer who is currently in the UK for her Future Nostalgia tour shared another one of her famous Instagram photo dumps, and amid the many happy snaps and mirror selfies was the artist also opting for the checked skirt.

Her ensemble was a little more suited to the London cold and comprised of a printed tee, grey cardigan, grungy checked skirt with metal rings connecting it to a thick black belt, sheer leggings and knee-high boots. It was finished off with a  Balenciaga wrap and black acetate sunglasses.

If you need us, we’ll be digging out our old uniforms for a DIY edit.
