CANNES, FRANCE: If Paris is the city of love, then Cannes is the scene for love’s glamorous rendezvous. On May 19, these particular coordinates along the French Riviera saw Dua Lipa publicly formalise her new relationship with boyfriend French film director Romain Gavras.
Twenty-seven-year-old Lipa, resplendent in a black, one-shouldered gown, and her new beau, 41, attended the premiere of Omar la Fraise, a love story about a gangster on the run, and directed by Franco-Algerian director Elias Belkeddar.
Nestled into one another in the cool Cannes evening—it has been raining every day since the festival began—Lipa couldn’t stop smiling. Her curtain fringe, seemingly as long as the theatre’s drapes themselves, couldn’t conceal her identity from the photographers in the pit. As a smaller film release, none were expecting Lipa to attend and thus many photographers had cleared out for the evening.

While Lipa and Gavras were first spotted leaving a party together in London in February, and then again on the streets of Paris post the Saint Laurent show at Fashion Week, this is their first official engagement.
Gavras is known for directing Kanye West’s music video “No Church In The Wild.” He also reportedly dated Rita Ora for six months. Lipa was in a two-year relationship with Anwar Hadid in 2019. Since, she’s been linked to Trevor Noah and Jack Harlow.

Lipa is in town for the May 23 reveal of her new collab collection with Versace. Titled “La Vacanza”, it will be available to purchase directly after the runway. So, what can we expect? Y2k accents aplenty, and perhaps a bottling of this unbridled euphoria Lipa is experiencing right now.
