It’s a beautiful day in Sydney as I sit down with Creative & Image Director for Dior Beauty, Peter Philips. The famed makeup artist has made the 20+ hour long journey from Paris to shoot the latest Dior Holiday Collection campaign with Anya Taylor Joy, the House’s beauty muse for the festive season. Drawing inspiration from Christian Dior’s fascination for the constellations, hallmark formulas like the Rogue Dior Forever lipstick, the Rogue blush and a shimmery Couleurs Couture eyeshadow palette is embossed with a starry motif and pressed into luxury packaging. Perfect for the gifting season.

Like Australia’s affinity for “luminous” and “effortless” beauty, as Philips explains, the limited-edition collection is made for anyone across the globe. From snow-covered alpine regions to women celebrating on sunny coastlines. For Christmas soirées and at parties into the New Year. Beauty has certainly shifted following the pandemic and looking squarely at a newfound freedom, the creative director says it’s all about “expressing yourself”.

Here, Philips speaks to new seasonal makeup trends, application tips and what we can expect from Dior Beauty in the future. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

On the way beauty has changed post-pandemic…

“The way that I think about beauty is always the same philosophy. Beauty, the way people use makeup, is a tool to boost your confidence, to enhance your beauty or to cover up what you’d like. It’s about expressing yourself.

“Also the way we design makeup, for lots of companies the pandemic was an extra push we all needed. We had been working on natural ingredients and formulas for years, we’ve been working on our reusable packaging philosophy for years, we’ve been working on using recycled materials and packaging, cutting down on the plastic that we use for years. But the pandemic gave us an extra push and helped facilitate the process.”

On the Australian approach to beauty…

“There’s a much more chilled approach, it’s a bit like South America. Because of the active lifestyle here, the beaches and the more relaxed way of life reflects in the way [Australians] do makeup… There is lots of glow and luminosity and nothing too, how do you say, too graphic. Natural, it looks effortless.”

On summer makeup trends…

“You don’t want to spend too much time on makeup because you want to go outside. It’s effortless. Play with subtle colours.”

On Rogue Dior Forever line…

“We wanted to combine the benefits of a liquid long lasting lipstick with the benefits of a stick with waxes and oils for more caring element. I wanted a formula which is over 80 percent of natural origin ingredients.

“You can apply it as a lip stain. Just apply a little on the centre of the lip and massage it and blend out the edges with a Q-tip or your finger. It lasts all day long. Or you can do a perfect drawn lip. It’s a fine stick so you can easily control the shape of your application. You can opt for a lip line but it’s easy to apply on its own.”

On Dior’s Christmas Holiday collection…

“The [Dior Holiday Collection] theme is constellations and stars, but at the end of the day it’s about beautiful shades and beautiful textures. The Holiday Collection is not just a Christmas look with a red lip and smoky eye. It’s much more than that. It is New Years Eve, it is parties in the snow and by the beach. Everybody everywhere in the world can find something in the Holiday Collection.”

On party makeup tips…

“Party makeup is about playing with the light that touches you. That’s what makes it beautiful. You walk in an event with candlelight or spotlights and every move you make is like alive!

“Bring out the density around the eyes, a bit darker, but add a sparkle. There is nothing more beautiful – like a starry night. When you move and open and close your eyes it’s like a firework. The glow should continue into the skin. Perhaps a gorgeous matte lipstick for a statement or a lighter lip shade or glossy lip to add that extra shine.”
