Sisters Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning have managed to each carve out their own niche and separate successful careers in the entertainment industry, so much so that it’s not often we see the two young women together at industry events at all.

But to celebrate their stylist Samantha McMillen, the sisters joined forces for an evening out in Hollywood, using the opportunity – and McMillen’s expertise – to showcase their contrasting approaches to style.

On Tuesday night, the Fannings attended a dinner held by The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo, in honour of the magazine’s annual power stylists issue, in which McMillen was named one of the 25 most powerful stylists of the year, for her work with them, as well as the likes of Ana de Armas, Kate Bosworth and Brie Larson.

For the event, McMillen dressed Dakota in a red leather asymmetric dress from Loewe’s spring/summer 2023 collection. The statement piece comes across the left shoulder and swoops down across the chest and below the right breast, using a faux anthurium – the statement floral of the collection – which is attached over the shoulder with a green strap-meets-flower stem to cover the skin.

She finished the look with a pair of gold Jimmy Choo sandals and no obvious jewellery, leaving her blonde hair long and straight.

Her younger sister, Elle, meanwhile, juxtaposed Dakota’s feminine look, opting for a pair of baggy low-rise grey pinstripe trousers and a matching cropped waistcoat as a top from Stella McCartney’s fall 2023 collection, which was unveiled in Paris just a few weeks ago. She wore a pair of patent heels on her feet, covered by her long trouser legs, and similarly wore her blonde hair loose with minimal makeup.

McMillen, who has been working with the sisters for over a decade, after dressing Dakota in Louis Vuitton for the 2012 Met Gala, has spoken in the past about how differently the sisters approach their style.

“They’re so different. They’re sisters, but I just look at them as different clients,” she told Teen Vogue back in 2016. “There are similarities in the attention to detail and the way that they plan for things. They both really love fashion and really go for it, which is really nice. I just have a lot of fun working with them.”
