We’re only halfway through January, yet 2024 already appears to be an endless procession of Hollywood glamour. This is in part due to the timing of the film and television industry’s annual awards season, as the theatrical excellences of our generation’s biggest actors command January to celebrate their achievements.
But given the events coincide with a renewal of our quotidian habits, the endless stream of red carpet fashion and beauty looks gives us a lot to consider for the remaining eleven months ahead. At the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards, there is much to be said about the return of ‘no makeup, makeup’.
Across the red carpet, the consensus from the honourable leading ladies is one of radiant complexions. As seen on everyone from Margot Robbie to Da’Vine Joy Randolph, the mode of now is a lit-from-within visage speckled with light-as-a-feather foundation and a dusting of blush across the apples of their cheeks.
Rather than experiment with bold techniques, as the stars have done in the past, the base of their beauty looks emphasise a light touch. So while the skin was kept relatively minimal, this allowed the hairstyles to steal the scene. Greta Lee and Elizabeth Debecki both proposed a punk redux, imbuing conventional ‘old Hollywood’ styles with high-voltage.
Starlets Billie Eilish and Ariana Greenblatt both used Y2K hair accessories to reprieve the low ponytail. The songstress pinned her signature two-toned locks with an unfussy hair clip while the Barbie breakout star styled her hair into a plait, incorporating a leather segment to compliment her Louis Vuitton ensemble.
