When Cody Simpson and Miley Cyrus started dating very soon after Cyrus announced her separation from her then-husband Liam Hemsworth, the pair went from zero to 100, real quick. There were tattoo dates, trips to visit Cyrus’ family in Nashville, Tennessee, rumours they’d moved in together, love songs released, and other reports (and Instagram accounts suggesting) they were starting a band. For all intents and purposes, they were the blueprint for the pandemic turbo relationship.
But less than a year later, in August 2020, the gushy Instagram posts had ceased and it appeared, quietly, so too had the pair’s relationship.
At the time, Cyrus confirmed the split on Instagram Stories, making a dig at magazine articles that claimed they had ‘reliable sources.’
“A year ago, almost to this exact date, the media tried to tell my story for me and control my narrative, and I’m just not accepting that,” Cyrus began, referencing her split from Hemsworth. “So today, it came out that me and my boyfriend have broken up. It was confirmed by a ‘reliable source’ even though no one is reliable in a relationship, except the individuals who are participating in it.”
“But right now, two halves can’t make a whole and we’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we wanna be, like everybody else at this age, we’re just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives. And so, don’t make it some drama story if next week we’re out hanging out or getting pizza. We’ve been friends for 10 years and we’re gonna continue to be friends,” she wrote.
Now, Simpson has revealed his side of the story. Speaking to 60 Minutes, the Australian musician explained that he and Cyrus felt their relationship had reached its natural end.
“I’d known her for a long time at that point,” Simpson said, adding, “not like a mentor but always a very hyper-creative person.”
“We went from being good friends, to just having a lot of the same friends, to being together for a while,” he continued. “Everything ended fairly amicably, and it was just one of those phases, I guess. You go through [it] and you learn a lot from it.”
Though Cyrus isn’t publicly dating anyone and is focusing on her music (and STANing Harry Styles), Simpson is dating model Marloes Stevens.
