Chanel’s Metiers d’art show is always anything but pedestrian – after all, it’s very purpose serves to showcase the artistic mastery of the house’s several hundred embroiderers, feather workers, paruriers, pleaters, shoemakers, hatters and glove-makers – and this year’s digital runway did little to divert from the fashion and beauty festoon we’ve come to anticipate.
Despite the almost-empty front row (only Kristen Stewart scored an in-person invite), models strode over chequered motifs, through the black and white ballroom of France’s Château de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley. The collection was inspired by Renaissance women, with intricate embroidery, plush knitwear, layers of pearls – but in true Chanel style, the ladylike garb was offset by a relaxed yet decidedly rock-and-roll beauty look.
Eyes were outlined with thick, Sixties-style shadow, creating a dual lid effect reminiscent of celebrated Mod icons Edie Sedgwick and Twiggy. All the emphasis was in the crease, as the smoky black lines were smudged across the socket in a half moon shape, all the way into the inner corner of the eye.
Inky liner was run over the upper and lower lash lines but edges were left soft, with the rest of the face almost bare but for a touch of translucent gloss atop unadorned lips. Factoring in the backdrop of2020, it could easily be considered the anti-lockdown look.
Then there was the hair, which saw a mix of manes anchored together via plenty of natural texture and kinked-out mermaid waves – a far cry from the romantic styles we saw last December at the 2019/2020 show. This time we were treated to piece-y crimped perfection, lending the overall aesthetic an undeniably rocker edge.
The best bit? Unlike a lot of runway shows, this one is entirely wearable and requires minimal effort. All you’ll need is a hair waver, some soft khol and a bit of clear gloss. Ready? Shop our cheat’s sheet below and consider taking your cues from Chanel’s polished rocker girls this party season.
