This Cartier season, the inimitable Clash de Cartier codes are intertwined into many of our editor’s favourites; the White Gold & Diamond Clash [Un]limited Watch, the Pink Gold, Onyx & Diamond Clash Ring – the tactility of these pieces feeding that uncompromising punk aesthetic.
The graphic precision and structure of the Cartier Clash [Un]limited watch – its bevelled dial, its geometric motifs – contrast the beads that roll softly against the wrist. It’s an aesthetic that harks back to Cartier’s Director of Fine Jewellery in the 1930s, Jeanne Toussaint, and her love of mixing preciousness with the industrial feel of ball bearings. So unique and striking, the watch is structured to create perspective, through its distinctive lines, corners and its 16-faceted cut glass that shapes its face.

Speaking of contrasts, Clash de Cartier’s signature picot stud is back with assertive rhythm this season; the below ring’s shining rose gold and round onyx beads are divided by a single line of diamond paving. Under the creative directorship of the legendary Toussaint (from 1933 to the 1970s) the picot continued as a signature of the Maison: repeated in lines, articulated in links, always adding a profusion of texture and visual extravagance. A timeless elegance with a flare for the rebellious. (You might remember Lily Collins starred in the campaign.)

You’ll also notice the more flexible pieces from the Clash de Cartier collection. Interestingly, they are so carefully constructed to ensure the double rows feel fluid for the wearer, that it takes up to 600 different components to assemble!

Another favourite is the Cartier Tank Française Watch in Yellow Gold. Both masculine and feminine, this timeless piece – with its metal bracelet in perfect harmony with the case – launched in 1996 and has been seen on the wrists of Michelle Obama, Gisele Bündchen, and Princess Diana (a watch that was later passed down to Meghan Markle). In 2023, the House of Cartier is reenergising the line with a brand new version!
“The new Tank Française reflects a creative conviction,” says Marie-Laure Cérède, Cartier’s Jewellery and Watchmaking Creative Director. “Like rediscovering the raw nature of a cut stone, it was about capturing the watch’s radical shape, simplifying its essential lines and stripping them of all embellishment to return to the myth’s origin.”
