Christian Dior wanted to know what joy smelt like. So he asked perfumer François Demachy to bottle it. The amalgamation of the two dreamers was JOY by Dior; an elusive, elated, euphoric fragrance that quite literally solicits a smile from all who walk through its sweet-smelling cloud. And now, the feeling has multiplied in the form of JOY by Dior Eau de Parfum Intense; a compressed, sophisticated, multi-faceted interpretation of the emotion.

It turns out, joy can mean a lot of things: dancing, swimming, singing, smiling, hugging, kissing, smelling. For influencer and content creator Carmen Hamilton, joy is a moment of silence, taking photographs, connecting, sunshine… all whilst caught up in the frenetic energy that is NYC. It’s a wake-up call; it will increase your pulse.

The olfactive interpretation of joy is, according to the house of Dior, a sparkling bouquet of grasse rose, jasmine, and citrus, before melting down to a creamy base of warm sandalwood and musk. It’s a sweet scent that’s equal parts strong and soft; lively but nuanced. And that’s just the thing about joy – it can be different things for different people, but it’s always light, sparkling, effervescent.

The fragrance, housed in a pink crystalline flacon, is a little bit of all the above (and then a little more). Mr Dior wanted joy in a bottle, and Demachy certainly delivered that feeling – an outstretched smile – in spades. Watch Carmen Hamilton muse on the idea of joy, life, work, and connecting in New York City below.
