Schiaparelli’s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2023/2024 show was a dedication to the surrealist codes embedded into the fabric of the Maison and the artisans who uplift this daring spirit through an unwavering devotion to the craft of creativity.

Naturally, this reverence for exceptional artisans was extended to their impeccably dressed front row, yet none rose to the challenge of rivalling the runway more than Cardi B.

With Haute Couture the pinnacle of sartorial innovation and mastery, couturiers showing on schedule during Paris also demand the same stylistic reverence from their guests. Exhibition is the mode, and as the Grammy Award winner has proven at every opportunity she’s no wallflower.

Instead, Cardi B proverbially matched Schiaparelli creative director Daniel Roseberry’s energy by proving she didn’t need a runway to turn a look—the steps of the Petit Palais were sufficient enough.

Roseberry has a penchant for dressing his guests in a custom look inspired by the collection he is presenting, and Cardi’s velvet column gown and dramatically oversized coat was no different.

Notes of the 30-year-olds ensemble were discerned in the black stretchy headbands and ornamental gold accents spotted on a melange of models.

However it was Maggie Maurer’s rope-like ivory coat—which evoked the image of The Chronicle Of Narnia‘s White Witch, (perhaps subtly referencing the lion head from the Maison’s Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2023/2024 couture collection)—reappropriated into a midnight-hued shawl that was Cardi’s tour de force.

As Roseberry described in a press release, the coat drew inspiration from French fauvism artist Henri Matisse. “Not his work,” Roseberry wrote, “but the palm fronds at the hotel Regina, now in black long haired shearling as a fantastic faux – coat.”

“This collection has been so heavily inspired by the agony and ecstasy of creation—but still offers clothes for a woman to love for a lifetime,” Roseberry added.

By the way Cardi was feeling herself in her look—and in those videos of her vibing with Tracee Ellis Ross in the front row—it’s clear that Roseberry has achieved his goal. Does the B in the rapper’s name stand for besotted, perhaps?
