There was an unmistakable thread of women’s empowerment running through the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.

Jennifer Lopez accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and with an on-fire performance proved that two decades into her career, she’s better than ever.

Another moving girl power moment unfolded when Cardi B, who was up for 10 awards, won the Best New Artist category. She used her acceptance speech to hit back at those who told her having a baby this early in her career – she gave birth to daughter Kulture last month – was a mistake.

“A couple of months ago, you know, a lot of people were saying ‘You’re gambling your career, you’re about to have a baby, what are you doing?’

“[But ]I had a baby, I carried the baby, and now I’m still winning awards.”

But wait, there’s more. At the conclusion of her performance of God Is A Woman, Ariana Grande brought her mother, grandmother and aunt out on stage.
