It’s been three days since the 63rd Annual Grammys aired but we just can’t stop thinking about Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” performance. The women really went out all for their first televised performance of the song: From that massive stiletto heel slash stripper pole and the giant queen bed, to the dollar bills falling from the ceiling as the two icons owned the stage, they weren’t the only ones shaking with excitement. People still can’t stop talking about it.
As anticipated, as soon as the performance was over critics’ fingers began to move almost as fast as the ladies dance moves, weighing in on steamy visual. One person who really got themselves worked up in a tizzy was left-wing pundit Candace Owens. On Monday, Owens appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox show, calling the performance “an attack on American values, American traditions” and accused the artists of “actively trying to make children aspire to things that are grotesque.” “We are celebrating perversity in America,” Owens continued. If nothing else, “WAP” illustrates just how much conservative politicians detest women who show agency over their bodies and enjoying themselves, especially sexually.
Cardi B responded to Owens on Twitter, writing “”Yaaaayyyyyyy WE MADE FOX NEWS GUYS !!! Wap wap wap.” She continued, tweeting: “”Matter fact I’m just going to thank Candy (Owens) She put my performance on Fox News giving it more views that boosted the views on YouTube and is counting towards my streams and sales,” the rapper tweeted. “Winking face with tongue STREAM UP AND WAP. REMEMBER GROWN PARENTS ONLY YOU CAN MONITOR WHAT YOUR KIDS WATCH NO1 ELSE.”
While we appreciate Cardi B being such a good sport about the dig Owen’s took at her, we wish she would have pointed out the fact that the custom Rey Ortiz rose gold chrome outfit she danced in weighed 18 pounds. Now that is worth talking about! “Eighteen pounds on my body,” Cardi captioned a shot of herself from the performance on Instagram. “I had to wear it tho it was amazing.” Ortiz took to Instagram in celebration of “WAP”-ping heavy collaboration, revealing that “even 10 hours before the performance [he] had the task to make this monster of a project work by continuing to do last minute modifications without compromising the design.”
We had no idea that when Cardi B rapped “What b*tch working as hard as me?” in her now diamond single, “Bodak Yellow,” that she meant that quite literally.
