Not with a whimper, but with a bang – that’s how design duo Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman (of Camilla and Marc, naturally) opened Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2018. Kicking off proceedings for the week late on Sunday afternoon, the label’s eponymous siblings presented a kind of greatest hits collection canvassing all those ready-to-wear touchstones that have made them one of Australian fashion’s most engrossing fixtures over the course of their 15 year tenure: razor sharp tailoring, unexpected fabrications, cerebral evening and outerwear, natty shirting and hints of relaxed sportswear – all of which was executed with a contemporary twist. Set against a cinematic backdrop that was equal parts terrestrial and extra – a Great Southern Land by way of Mars – the combined effect was entirely befitting of the prestigious ‘Mercedes-Benz Presents’ opening slot of the week, and indicative of the kind of pioneering frontierswoman that they anointed as their muse for the Resort 2019 season.

In the days prior to the show, the siblings gave GRAZIA an in-depth look at the particulars of several stand-out looks from their homecoming collection – the results of which are documented in the video above. One of those looks, a high semi-cowl neck shirt-dress in a new camelia print, was styled for the show by Christine Centenera to include a pair of lightly flared and tailored pants underneath in the same hue as the red earth stamped underfoot. The look was paired with one of Camilla and Marc’s showstopping over-oversize alligator embossed totes – one of several that elicited breathless exaltations from all around on each new pass.

It said it all, really: from neck-to-toe, C&M had this in the bag from the very start.
