Does a shared life need to require shared living spaces? Cameron Diaz has some progressive thoughts about the matter. While she’s been happily wedded to Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden since 2015, the actress divulged her belief that relationships might be better off by having separate bedrooms—and even separate houses.

The 51-year-old made the claim during an appearance on Molly Sims and Emese Gormley’s Lipstick on the Rim podcast.

“I have my house, you have yours, and we have the family house in the middle,” she explained of her ideal situation. “I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine.”

She noted that there would naturally be a communal space for, er, intimacy.

“We’d have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations,” she added.

The unique take got the podcast hosts laughing. They joked that the actress probably shouldn’t have shared her unconventional opinion with the public, but Diaz was unphased.

“I’ve already said it,” she responded before assuring that she didn’t actually want to live apart from her husband.

“By the way, I don’t feel that way now because my husband is so wonderful,” she exclaimed. “I said that before I got married.”

Diaz and Madden welcomed their daughter, Raddix, in January 2020.

Though the couple, who welcomed their daughter, Raddix, in 2020, tend to keep a low profile, they’ve both sung their praises about each other.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2016, Diaz mused about how getting hitched was never part of her plan.

“[Marriage] was the biggest thing I’ve done in my 40s, and it opened me up in different ways,” she said. “It’s pretty awesome. I didn’t think it was something I’d do, and I don’t know if I’d have done it if I hadn’t met my husband. It was a surprise.”

Madden also shared his adoration for his wife in an Instagram post to celebrate her birthday back in 2018.

“So many things that make me so proud of you and how special you are. Thank you for being the best friend and partner to me and taking this journey of Marriage,” he wrote.

“The way you live your life every day, and your compassion for the world shines [through] in your eyes, and you inspire me to want to be the best man I can be in this lifetime. You’re the realest. I’m so grateful to be yours. Always&Forever, and to call you my One&Only. True Love.”

Since retiring from acting, Diaz and Madden have been residing in Montecito, California.
