Few Australian artists can lay claim to shaping the arts landscape both at home and abroad in much the same way that Brett Whiteley did.

The late icon’s life and legacy are explored in the artist’s own voice in the first trailer for Whiteley, a new documentary that celebrates this singular figure who did so much to shape Australia’s rich cultural history throughout the 1970s and 80s. Featuring narration from the artist himself and starring his wife and noted cultural figure, Wendy Whiteley, the documentary was directed by James Bogle, who co-wrote the script with Victor Gentile as part of Screen Australia’s Documentary Producer program. Whiteley will canvas over four decades of archival footage, including never-before-seen interviews with the artist and his collaborators, as well as insights into his process by means of his personal notebooks.

The film will also have its world premiere at the St. George OpenAir Cinema in Sydney on Thursday February 9, 2017, before enjoying widespread release in cinemas nationally from May 11. Tickets for the OpenAir Cinema, the full program for which was unveiled yesterday, go on sale at 9am on Monday December 12, 2016.
