Few cinema experiences can compare to that of the St. George OpenAir Cinema on the strength of its mise en scène alone. Add to that a stellar programming lineup and you have all the ingredients for a nonpareil summer of al fresco cinema, one that this year includes twenty premiere and preview screenings for some of the year’s biggest films thus far, as well as major Awards Season contenders for the coming months.
Beginning January 7, this year’s programming schedule opens with Lion, a serious contender for the year’s most heart-wrenching film starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman; Jackie, Natalie Portman’s tour de force as a grieving, recently bereaved Jackie Kennedy is also on the bill; as is Manchester by the Sea, a film whose campaign toward the Best Actor category for lead Casey Affleck appears to march forward, unhampered by recently resurfaced sexual assault allegations. Loving, starring the heavenly pairing of Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, Gold, Hidden Figures and the much anticipated Trainspotting sequel also feature prominently.
You’ll also have the chance to catch some of the year’s biggest releases to date, including Tom Ford’s sophomore outing Nocturnal Animals, Arrival, The Founder, Allied, Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them and the imminent Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. La La Land, Damien Chazelle’s magical paean to Old Hollywood, will also have its harbourside outing.
Featuring food and wine catered by Events by Aria, the 21st annual St.George OpenAir Cinema will run from January 7 to February 17, 2017. Tickets go on sale at 9am on Monday December 21.
