As promised earlier this week, Billie Eilish delivered the latest single from her highly anticipated sophomore album today. A mellow, acoustic guitar-driven ballad, “Your Power” seems to find the 19-year-old Grammy winner in a contemplative mood, exploring the power of vulnerability.

“I feel very vulnerable putting this one out because I hold it so close to my heart,” Eilish writes in an Instagram post. “This is about many different situations that we’ve all either witnessed or experienced. I hope this can inspire change. Try not to abuse your power.”

Oh, to be sitting on a mountain top listening to this track!

That’s precisely where the accompanying video—which Eilish directed—finds her, the wind tousling her platinum blonde hair and drenched in warm sepia tones that seem to echo the song’s warm guitar chords. “Try not to abuse your power,” she sings in the chorus, as a massive snake winds itself around her, “You might not want to lose your power / but power isn’t pain.”

It’s quite a contrast to her last self-directed video for the playfully menacing “Therefore I Am,” which found the singer frolicking around a deserted mall.

The new album, Happier Than Ever, is due out July 30. It once again finds Eilish collaborating with her brother Finneas on all 16 songs. “This is my favourite thing I’ve ever created,” she wrote in an Instagram post announcing the album earlier this week. “I’ve never felt so much love for a project than I do for this one.”

Eilish’s debut “When We All Go to Sleep, Where Do We Go?” was one of the best-selling records of 2019 and earned her seven Grammys, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year in 2020. If “Your Power” is any indication, Happier Than Ever seems likely to continue that hot streak while continuing to document the evolution of a young titanic talent.
