Abroad there is a new sense of normality. People can be seen hugging and kissing, the European beaches are awash with holiday-makers and the world’s most celebrated events have will be held ‘in person’. The 2021 Cannes Film Festival will return to the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès at Cannes this month for a magnificent lineup of films.
The red carpet promises all the glitz and glamour of years gone by while on screen, the program will feature pre-pandemic projects and completely new and unheard creations. The Cannes film festival also serves as a platform for some of the most iconic cultural moments. It was just two years ago that Elton John and Taron Egerton performed side-by-side for a rendition of “Rocketman”, and the same spot director Quentin Tarantino received a seven-minute standing ovation at the premiere of Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood.
Indeed the 2021 schedule will promise many more moments. These are the films to follow from July 6 to July 17.
Aline
Loosely based on the life of Celine Dion, Aline follows a young French-Canadian woman names Aline Dieu who is catapulted to international stardom while she navigates a relationship with her much older manager. It features Dion’s music but doesn’t mention the original artist herself. The unofficial biopic will see the film’s director, Valérie Lemercier, also play the titular character. If anything, consider us intrigued.
annette
Starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, Annette follows the story of a marriage between a stand-up comedian (Driver) and an opera singer (Cotillard). Their lives completely change when they have their first daughter. Directed by Leos Carax with music led by art-pop duo Sparks, it’s arty and eccentric.
The French Dispatch
The long-awaited follow up to Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs is finally here. Featuring an all-star cast including Timothée Chalamet, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Saoirse Ronan, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson, the film follows a collection of stories that were originally published in The French Dispatch magazine. It has been described as a love letter to journalists set in the 1950s.
Jane by charlotte
In a directorial debut for Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jane By Charlotte charts the complex relationship the filmmaker and actress had with her celebrated mother, Jane Birkin (the woman who inspired the Hermès Birkin bag). The documentary will make its official premiere at the festival.
