I admit that I’m one for dramatics, but in no way, shape, or form will Anya Taylor-Joy’s fashion and beauty at the 2021 Golden Globes ever be given the sheer amount of attention it deserves. For the virtual award show, the 24-year-old actress stunned in an emerald green Dior Haute Couture gown teamed with matching heels and accessorised with over $1 million worth of Tiffany & Co. diamonds. To top it off, the Queen’s Gambit star debuted chess-themed acrylic nails that pay tribute to her role of Beth Harmon in the 2020 Netflix miniseries. In case you missed it, that’s the show she won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series.

Taylor-Joy’s acrylics were brought to life by celebrity manicurist Kim Truong, who thankfully shared an up-close photo of the chess-themed set on her Instagram feed. The nail artist coated half of Anya’s nails in a pretty shade of pale, opaque pink, and the other half were left unpainted. Instead of coating them in colour, Truong left them transparent and created artwork celebrating her fictional character’s passion for the game. Such designs included itty-bitty pawn pieces, an intricately detailed queen chess piece, and a tribute to “Modern Chess Openings” (the reference book gifted to Harmon from her original chess mentor, Mr. Shaibel).

Truong exclusively tells GRAZIA USA that she designed the acrylic nails as a special treat for the actress ahead of her big day. “I created the nails as a gift, so it was a surprise to Anya,” the manicurist tells GRAZIA USA over the phone. “As soon as she saw them, she wanted to incorporate the nails with her Dior look.”

The designs took Truong about four hours to hand-paint the night before the event. She created a total of ten custom nails to surprise the Golden Globe nominee and ten pink nails to mix and match. Day-of, Truong, Taylor-Joy, and fashion stylist Law Roach, put their heads together to decide which designs to proceed with. A look at all of the nails created by Truong below, courtesy of the nail artist, including designs referencing the TV character’s hallucination-inducing pills and her affinity for Ripple wine.

The manicurist opted for a pink nail shade on fingers without a design to keep the look “fresh and elegant.” She tells us that the exact nail shade was a custom-mixed pink-nude colour born to complement Taylor-Joy’s elegant green gown and bronzed smokey eye. The whole look was undeniably *chefs kiss* perfection.
