Angela Bassett attends the 93rd Annual Academy Awards at Union Station on April 25, 2021 in Los Angeles, California.

There are many Oscars moments I simply can’t stop thinking about this evening: Halle Berry’s drastic haircut, Zendaya’s $6 million worth of Bulgari jewels, and Angela Bassett’s double take-worthy blue eyeshadow, the work of celebrity makeup artist D’Andre Michael for Lancôme. Even though it’s 10:02 EST on a Sunday evening, the star’s glam has me thinking about digging up my most colorful eyeshadow palette.

The inspiration? “The overall look was royal and regal, inspired by Cleopatra, a woman in charge of her own destiny,” the makeup artist explains in a statement provided to GRAZIA. “Leading with beauty, confidence, and dignity, she doesn’t bow to rules. She paves the way, sets the tone, and she does what others don’t have the guts to do.”

To bring the gorgeous blue smokey eye to life, the makeup artist used the Lancôme Hypnôse 5-Color Eyeshadow Palette in Bleu Hypnotique and shade #4 (shimmer cobalt blue) over the entire eyelid and lower lid below the lashes. He then used shade #5 (matte navy) on the upper and lower lash line and blended out to the corners for dimension and smoky eye effect. After that, he used a blend of shades #1 (shimmer white) and #3 (gold) in the inner corners of her eyes.

Once her eyeshadow was *chefs kiss* perfect, Michael artist added Lancôme Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony on the inner lower and upper eyelid, smudging it along the lower lash. He finished her eye makeup with a few coats of the cult-favorite Lancôme Monsieur Big Volumizing Mascara on the upper and lower eyelashes for length and drama.
