Since 2009, YOOX has dedicated its huge retail name to a platform entirely dedicated to sustainable and responsible fashion. During a time when “going green” was largely inaccessible nor was it explored, the online store launched YOOXYGEN and later in 2017, the YOOXYGEN Awards in a bid to educate and launch young designer’s careers. This May, award-winner Marissa Petteruti was the latest creative to obtain the honour.
In line with winning the annual award, YOOX launched AMENDMENT X YOOX – a 11-piece genderless capsule collection – based on the concept of “uniform dressing”. Using her heightened social consciousness, Petteruti looks to unite people while reducing excessive consumption in a capsule of refined and functional wardrobe staples.
“In the world of unrest that we live in today, I saw the ubiquity of ordinary clothes to be something that could bring people together. Their practicality, comfort and functionality speak to a wider audience and can create the solidarity that we currently lack,” says Marissa Petteruti. “As awareness on sustainability grows in the fashion industry, it is becoming more and more important for designers to realise the impact of our industry on the environment. It is our responsibility to change this by incorporating sustainability into practice. Sustainability should be increasingly perceived as second nature within the design process and a way of working.”
Reminiscent of ’90s streetwear, the capsule is made up of a number of innovative silhouettes that transform in several simple steps. Amongst t-shirts, sweatshirts, jeans and sneakers, the pieces are engineered through the use of zippers, with jeans easily turning into a jacket while the crewneck can be reinvented as a pair of sweatpants. Dressed in a basic colour palette, the designs are given modern street appeal thanks to bold graphics and colour blocking.
Adding to its theme of sustainable practices, the entire collection is created with 100 percent certified organic cotton, while the denim has undergone limited washing methods, rather distressed with new laser technology treatment.
