Ah, 2004! Teeny tiny skirts and ugg boots reigned supreme in our wardrobes, Facebook had just launched and singer Britney Spears was engaged to (and subsequently married) Jason Allen Alexander for a whole 55 hours. We can draw similarities to our current slightly messy, always bizarre pop culture 17 years later, but nothing could compare to the release of Mean Girls (not even the season two finale of Euphoria).

Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan and Lacey Chabert were the original problematic teenagers of the silver screen and it has remained a cult film ever since. Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel this week, Seyfried who is preparing to star in The Dropout revisited the hysteria surrounding her breakout role.

The actress reflected on the two premieres she needed to attend for the release admitting that she bought her own dresses for the red carpet and did her own makeup.  “I did not have a stylist, I used the only money I had to buy a dress,” Seyfried said. “There were two premieres and so I had to buy two dresses because you have to wear different dresses.”

The first ensemble featured a midi body-con style dress with tiny polkadots. She paired it with a white bra and black underwear which was just visible under the slightly sheer fabric. The second look featured a mini-length lace dress.

“I didn’t know any of the rules, so I was wearing a white bra, black underwear and no slip. I paid $600 for that dress,” the actress said, cringing. Seyfried joked that she used all the money she had at the time on the dresses so she couldn’t afford a ride home. She walked instead.

Kimmel asked why she hadn’t asked the film studio to provide clothing. The 36-year-old explained, she “didn’t ever ask anything because I thought I was in the way.”

Seyfried will now play the infamous Elizabeth Holmes in the upcoming Hulu series, The Dropout.
