Mamma Mia! Here we go again. Surely those were the exact words that came out of Thomas Sadoski’s mouth when he realised his wife Amanda Seyfried was reprising her role of Sophie in the Mamma Mia sequel – a move that meant she’d be sharing screen-time with her ex-boyfriend Dominic Cooper.
Ten years ago, Seyfried and Cooper fell in love while playing a young couple on the set of the film. They dated for three years before ending things in 2011 and becoming friends. In a recent interview, Seyfried admitted her husband was a little jealous. “I think he has the same kind of issues that I would have if we were hanging out with his ex-girlfriend from long ago,” Seyfried told The Mirror. “I think it’s always like, ‘I’m so in love, so that person must be so in love with her, too.’ I assume everyone’s in love with Tommy because I’m in love with him. I assume that everybody sees him the way I do. I’d guess he assumed Dominic is in love with me the way he’s in love with me. And it’s just not the case.’
“I’d rather he be jealous than completely fine with it,” she continued. “He’s been great. He’s very supportive and he loves this movie. They got along absolutely fine when we were shooting.”
Just prior to production last year, Cooper spoke to The Times and said he wasn’t at all nervous about working with Seyfried again. “I think it will be fine working with Amanda again,” he said at the time. “I haven’t spoken to her for a while, but we always remained friends. Though it’ll be odd, gazing into each other’s eyes and singing an ABBA song.”
In 2013, Seyfried spoke to ELLE citing she could never be with someone who didn’t understand the platonic relationship between she and Cooper. “He’ll always be in my life, regardless of what his girlfriends or future wife think,” she explained. “I’m never going to be with a guy that can’t deal with my friendship with him.”
Younger heroine Sutton Foster (who plays Liza) experienced the same situation when her ex-husband Christian Borle was cast as her love interest, Dom, in the television hit. While executive producer Darren Star checked with Foster prior to casting, we wonder how her current husband Ted Griffin (whom she married in 2014) felt about the storyline. Borle and Foster were married for four years.
