For the love of all things Britney! Gigi Hadid’s star studded 24th birthday party tonight was an absolute denim festivus. The singer’s hits, the early 00’s, that famed red carpet couple-dressing and gratuitous levels of denim formed the theme for the supermodel’s soiree at New York City’s swanky L’Avenue restaurant.
Infamously, in 2001, former boyfriend and girlfriend popstars Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears donned head-to-toe matching custom denim ensembles which, truly, they never lived down. It was peak popstar-attire and has gone on to inspire many, many spoofs and a few honest revivals. Perhaps none more so than tonight. It-girls and guys from every corner of celebrity rocked up to attend Ms. Hadid’s annual celebration.
Celebs such as Hailee Steinfeld, Olivia Culpo, Ashley Graham and Helena Christensen made the door list, each taking on very chic versions of fully-swathed denim, while a these-days-more-reclusive Taylor Swift showed up in denim levels that seemed questionably slim-to-none. Gigi’s sister, Bella Hadid, read the invitation correctly, however, in a sexy denim bodice particularly reminiscent of Spear’s original dress.
Imagine all these It-celebs in one place, at one time, all in denim. What a night for the hardy cotton! And the 00’s fashion nods didn’t end there…hooped gold earrings, chunky hiking boots, cropped tees and apparently plenty of Britney sing-a-longs pumped up the nostalgia.
Perhaps a timely, or controversial, theme, considering the Spears fandom is currently in overdrive with the hashtag #FreeBritney, suggesting that the troubled star is being held in a psychiatric facility against her will. Insiders inferring that it was Spears’ manager Larry Rudolph that forced her into it in the first place, and not her on her own free will.
Double (or triple! or quadruple!) denim is never far from the top of the fashion charts, however polarising a Spears/Timberlake homage might be. Gigi’s theme tonight might have been tinged with fancy dress irony, but the well-dressed way these guys and girls crafted their looks has made a serious case for a redux (again). Shame no one did Justin’s denim fedora though…
