At a recent dinner celebrating her 10th anniversary, Anna Quan founder Anna Hoang, said that a lot of her inspiration came from watching people in the city. Going from work to home, or events in the evening, and it made her want to make clothing that could adapt to these scenarios and forgo the need for an outfit change.

Several months later, Hoang has put her words to the ultimate test: a new Resort 2024 collection for Afterpay Australian Fashion Week with a runway that took place in an alleyway in the heart of the city, tucked behind current hot accomodations, the Ace Hotel.

“After focusing mainly on one product category, namely shirts, it’s a real honour to come full circle in my 10th year and provide a wider and more complete offering,” Hoang told GRAZIA ahead of the show. “This collection is obviously for my customers. Customers that enjoy everyday clothing and can find the special details in the everyday.”

According to the show notes, the collection was literally inspired by the white collar workers of the city and by the artist Pawel Jaszczuk’s infamously brilliant images of the Japanese Salaryman.

The familiar Anna Quan less is more aesthetic was there, seen in the tailored simplicity that plays toys with proportions, which has been a benchmark of her work. This now extends to trench coats and asymmetrically cut jacket-tops with matching skirts.

Joining the tailored pieces was a series of evening, or cocktail, inspired dresses. Mesh dresses embroidered in sequins, silk gowns with lace detailing across the bust. Hoang’s white collar worker is clearly hitting the town after work tonight.

It also saw the our first glimpse of Anna Quan menswear: white seer sucker and grey sleeveless suiting mixed with more casual chartreuse silk shirts.

“One of my favorite stories from this collection would be the sequins!” says Hoang. “This is something I don’t usually do but I love mixing textures together, especially unexpected textures to create an everyday look.”
