In a fashion industry characterised by linen, boxy silhouettes and an Earthy palette, Romance Was Born can always be relied on to bring the super-saturated colour to Afterpay Australian Fashion Week. Today’s Resort 23 collection, ‘Done Zone’, drew inspiration from artist Ken Done: “There is definitely a club tropicana vibe and an 80’s Australian vibe we can’t seem to avoid,” co-founder Luke Sales told GRAZIA.

The beauty look maintained a similar intensity. Led creatively by makeup artist Nicole ‘Pinkie’ Thompson for Mecca Max, big, bold technicolour was on the menu (Thompson even referenced the rainbow fish as inspiration).

Rather than one ‘look’, each model was painted with poppy shades of fuchsia pink, teal green, pistachio, tangerine, acidic yellow and purple. Shadows had no beginning or end — instead, it was a technicolour dream fest of bright pigment on unlikely features like the forehead, cheeks, temples and eyes. Skin was powdery and soft, lips were bare and brows were full but bushy (unless, they too were dusted with colour).

In summation, it exactly the kind of audacious makeup we’ve been craving after various lockdowns and La Niña weather systems.

Hair was also a lot of fun. Stylists created slick top knots, silky waves and wet-look curves using a combination of GHD Hot tools and Schwarzkopf Professional styling products. Again, there wasn’t a set style, but a series of quirky looks that complimented both the makeup, and the model.

In short, Romance always brings the colour, but Drone Zone felt extra special.
