If there’s one style that strikes a cultural chord, it’s Indie-Rock. As others look to the ‘80s and ‘90s for their sartorial cues, Hedi Slimane drives Celine’s time-honoured craftsmanship forward with the grungey opulence of this distinctive era.
Fusing European chic and American classic cool, Slimane’s Winter 2023 collection doesn’t just revel in the past but reignites the spark of a time when many of us first learned to truly dress for ourselves. And what better way to explore ‘A Stylist’s Take’ on ‘The Age of Indieness’ than on the Celine model-muse herself, Tilly Main?

To pull off a sequin embroidered cardigan without looking overly bourgeois, add opaque sunglasses—the more oversized or wrapped, the better. Tilly herself is partial to a sunglasses moment, arriving at the studio epitomising the look.
Given her everyday penchant for an oversized leather jacket and combat boots to contrast her signature icy blonde hair, it’s no surprise she was plucked to star in the Celine Winter 2023 show at the iconic Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles last year. I managed to grab her for this styling session, but she was en route to Shanghai for Celine’s next fashion trunk show.

Double denim works best with the right amount of fade. This trucker-style jacket was borrowed from the menswear collection, offering a welcomed slouch. Part of Celine’s enduring appeal is how it highlights the unisex nature of clothes. Women in chunky boots and tailored suits, and men in pussy-bow blouses and skin-tight trousers. For an Indie Rock look, I loved adding a bit of glitz with rhinestone accents in the jacket and sling-backs.

A mohair cardi jacket may appear like a throwback to vintage glamour, but it’s an iconic European essential, and its entire vibe can shift effortlessly with the right styling. Thrown over mini shorts, sheer knee-high socks and slingback kitten heels, this polished staple is given a timeless edge, highlighting the beauty of ‘00s Indie-sleaze where occasions and settings never factored into style.

Accessories are a stronghold signature of Celine, and what were the ‘00s if not a time of curious accoutrements? I’m particularly coveting the Héloïse, this year’s slouchy silhouette that is the ultimate everyday bag. The design team at Celine was so enamoured with Tilly that they are set to name a bag after her. When I quizzed Tilly on what the bag might look like, she was tight-lipped but thrilled to take on the honour—we’ll be watching this space.

A tailored vest is perhaps the most versatile wardrobe essential one can invest in. Tap into ‘I’m with the band’ energy with skinny leather or denim jeans. Otherwise, elevate the look by wearing the waistcoat as a top over tailored pants or skirt for a soft suiting look.

A chunky cable-knit sweater reminiscent of the one you always borrowed from your dad is the ultimate throw-over piece to make you feel cosy and instantly put together. Now, there’s no need to raid his closet with the choice of a cream turtleneck or Triomphe Fair Isle Wool sweater by Celine. It’s a look with plenty of mileage, especially when worn with the luxury of cashmere athletic shorts.
When I asked Tilly who inspires her taste, she said, without a doubt, her Dad. “My Dad had an effeminate way of dressing. Slim-fitted silk blouses, even with bows, worn with tailored suits,” she says. “He profoundly affected my interest in fashion and taught me never to fear wearing clothes your way. Growing up in a small country town wasn’t always easy, as I really stood out. But I didn’t care, thanks to my Dad being a role model.”
