Following Sunday’s Golden Globes, our attention on the awards season trail has turned to the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The event was originally scheduled to take place on March 14 and instead will now air on April 4. This year will look starkly different too with the entire awards show pre-taped.

According to Varietythe ceremony will run for just one hour.

“We’re looking at trying to do a unique award ceremony in an hour and leave people saying, which they very rarely do [with an awards show], ‘Man, I wish we had more,'” co-executive producer Todd Milliner told the publication.

Of course with such endeavour, logistics are important. Awards will be handed out in the days prior to the event with each nominee in categories to appear in Zoom rooms. The winner will be given the chance to make an acceptance speech. In 2021 there are 13 awards and feature comedy bits as well as the traditional “I Am An Actor” segments from nominees and other presenters. The event will also include an “In Memoriam” segment.

“It is a jam-packed hour, and we’re still trying to rob from one part to give to another part,” Milliner said. “When you start parsing out that hour, we didn’t really have time for a stage. Honestly if none of the rest of the show was going to be live we thought, let’s put the rest of this time into those segments [such as ‘I Am An Actor’ and In Memoriam].”

As for spoilers? Co-executive producer Kathy Connell assures that won’t happen.

“We hope they respect the show enough and everybody does, and their fellow actors, that they don’t want to disappoint the audience at home by letting any surprises go,” Connell said.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on April 4 at 9pm EST or for Australians, April 5 at 12pm AEST.
