Admittedly we’re only four months into 2021, but according to top Sydney stylist Anthony Nader, there’s already one it-girl hair cut that’s consistently referenced by his clients: Kaia Gerber’s bob.
It’s not really a huge surprise, given Gerber is the coolest model of the moment (and daughter to the forever iconic Cindy Crawford). Gerber has also undergone a serious hair transformation over the past 18-months, ditching her long, thick mane for a short, choppy, layered bob.

It’s also a low-maintenance style that feels fitting for the times. Many of us are working from home, and want to spend less time messing around with blow-dryers and hot tools. The appeal in Gerber’s style more or less lies in its imperfections – shoulder-grazing length, natural texture, soft movement and subtle layers around the face.
According to Instagram, Gerber’s original chop was done by Guido Palau, and as detailed by Nader, has been a go-to reference for the rest of us ever since.

It’s a style that suits most hair types – the only gripe is it’s difficult to tie back (so keep this in mind if you’re in a long-term relationship with a slick bun). There’s also minimal styling involved; simply air-dry, add some texturising product and a few bends with a flat iron or tong and you’re done.
Gerber is no doubt genetically blessed with great hair as is, but for the rest of us, a few expertly-chosen products will help you emulate a similar look.

SHOP THE edit below:
R + Co Dallas Thickening Shampoo, $45. SHOP NOW
This fattening shampoo is full of biotin to plump up the hair shaft, and gentle cleansers to remove build-up. Think full, airy volume without bulk. If you’re going short, consider ditching traditional conditioner for a lightweight leave-in mist instead.
Cloud Nine The Texture Wand, $245. shop now
If you need a little extra movement, try wrapping the hair around this Cloud Nine wand. The tapered barrel makes for a soft bend as opposed to a rounded curl. Simply hold the mid-lengths around the barrel for 10 seconds – leaving the ends free – and release. Alternate directions for a lived-in, natural finish as well.
Pureology Beach Waves Sugar Spray, $38. shop now
If your hair lacks grip, try misting a little of this sugar spray through. It’s slightly tacky, and will give your strands some natural-looking movement. You can use it whilst the hair is damp to give long-lasting hold, as a final step to add texture, or to refresh day-old/slept-on strands. The super fresh scent is a nice touch as well.
