Lorde is officially back after an almost two-year hiatus, and it’s with uplifting new single Green Light, released on Friday.

The 20-year-old had previously said her new work would be inspired by the last two years, which have marked major changes for the Kiwi, and judging from Green Light it appears she’s been through a lot personally but has come out on top.

The energetic dance-pop track with an addictive beat and wide-ranging vocal reach references a relationship that ended bitterly, but it’s overall empowering and uplifting, a hurt-but-hopeful, blast-it-in-the-car-alone kind of song.

The new sound indicates Lorde’s done some growing up since we last heard from her on Pure Heroine, gaining a new-found confidence as both a woman and an artist.

As she tweeted the day before teasing the track “It’s the first chapter of a story I’m gonna tell you, the story of the last two wild, fluorescent years of my life.”

Taking to Instagram as Green Light dropped early Friday, Lorde also announced the name and shared the cover of her upcoming sophomore album: Melodrama.

Green Light is officially out in the world, and I am so pleased to share with you that this song is the first from my sophomore record, Melodrama,” she wrote. “This is the cover, painted by Sam McKinniss. Welcome to the new world.”

Elaborating on her new album in an interview with Beats 1 radio show on Friday, the New Zealand born star said “For me it was kind of about processing what I want to say next and I knew it just couldn’t be any old thing.

“It had to be really special and really singular and it couldn’t sound the same as the old stuff and there was a lot of discovery that went on.”

She also explained why she moved back to NZ after a year or so away from home.

“It was good for me, I think. It’s crazy when you are so young to be spending all your time in L.A. or New York. I think it can kind of f–k with you if you’re a kid.”
