UPDATE 14/09/16: After a 20 second teaser for Fifty Shades Darker dropped yesterday, the film’s first official trailer has been released.
It might be because expectations are naturally low following Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan’s chemistry-less performance in Fifty Shades Of Grey, but according to the clip, the sequel looks like a movie we might actually watch.
Set to a beautiful rendition of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love by Grammy Award-winning singer Miguel, the clip has all the steamy moments you’d expect, but also hints at a storyline that goes deeper into the characters’ psyches. At times the movie also has the feel of a thriller as people from the past emerge, giving the feeling Anastasia could come into harm’s way.
There’s also a gratuitous shot of Dornan’s ripped torso, because Fifty Shades Darker knows exactly what we came for.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Despite falling short of it’s tantalising viewing promise, Fifty Shades of Grey – the first instalment in the E.L. James-penned franchise – still grossed AUD$755 million at the worldwide box office in 2015. Now, 18 months later, we find ourselves on the eve of the second film’s trailer release, Fifty Shades Darker, and again, worldwide anticipation surprises me. Or perhaps I just can’t shake the first film’s audience response; many laughing, some shrieking, at the simple and clichéd script. This isn’t to say I’m not intrigued by the next film though, I am a big fan of Dakota Johnson.
Chemistry-less Johnson and Jamie Dornan return as the naïve and newly-single Anastasia Steele and young billionaire Christian Grey. The film sees the pair rekindle their past flame, in similar dominant-versus-submissive-style sex sequences nonetheless, as Grey suggests a new arrangement. Notable new additions to this instalment include Rita Ora and Australian Bella Heathcoate. Today, a 19 second teaser trailer released ahead of the official film trailer tomorrow. Fifty Shades Darker will premiere in Australia on February 12, 2017.
